It is said that the devil is in the details – or is it said that god is in the details? Your image here is detailed in both a godly and satanic way, not in the sense of holiness and evil but in a way that reveals the worse and better angels of this woman’s nature by means of a multiplicity of striking surface effects.
I think she is deeply sad and deeply wounded. Your interpretation is intriguing.
Deep wounds and deep sadness make us unable to clearly hear and understand the good and bad “angels” sitting on our shoulders and advising us. (I do not use the word “angels” in any religious sense, but rather in Hamlet’s “to be or not to be” sense.) And unable to understand our conflicting pieces of advice to ourselves, we are at risk of acting against our own best interests, as well as the interests of others. At the same time, without wounds and sadness our joys would not be experienced as sharply; they would lack the context of real life experience.
