Flooding from a recent hurricane made this vintage advertising a bit more endangered. I felt the bicycle added a lot to this composition. From my new book, POP ART, a compilation of vintage beverage advertising signs available now on Blurb.com
coke pop bicycle vintage nostalgia mexic coca cola
What a great shot Stephen. Why do I like it? The nice lead-in by the bicycle, the variety of colours and textures. ( And I hate cats, haha! sorry)
Thanks for your comments. I was just a typical tourist, but this location really caught my eye, and I think the red rubber tires on the old bicycle do really make it work. I have collected many more painted Coca Cola signs, and hope to make a book of them soon. Max and Tori say “HI!”
Yes, a great street scene with the Coca-Cola logo, rusty stuff on the wall, the bike! Great composition…
Thanks! Actually the coloration of the walls is high-water damage from hurricane flooding.
I love the colours and textures and also the fact that the faded coke advert is using a bottle, so much nicer than a can.
I have made a book of these old signs, wish I knew more of their history, but it seems to be a lost art, new ones are not being painted, and the old ones have all but faded away.
I like the faded away ones. They have more charactor
perfectly wonderful textures and feel of the gorgeous city… i love the feeling of the islands I get from this . and makes me miss puerto rico so much
Oh YES, this is wonderful…..love the addition of the bicycle. Di
Hi Stephen, I too love this shot and would be interested to see your book/collection. I’ve just recently traveled to Mexico and was overawed at Coca Cola’s presence. I am a screenwriter and in my next screenplay I would very much like one of my lead characters to be an American who traveled Mexico painting such signs. A work of fiction, not a documentary, but I very much want to research this subject. But all my efforts to find out about the invasion of coke signage in the ’50’s has met brick walls. In your exploration of this subject did you come across any information like this? PS, just found this site and will soon get a profile happening and load some of my own art.
Thank you for your interest, and for commenting on the book preview. My brief travels in Baja, Mexico only found this one photo, but I was not actually seeking them at the time I went. Everything I have is in the book, and many examples are on RedBubble, but all but this one are located in the USA. Let me know how the movie progresses, I would love to see it.
I did approach the CocaCola company with an offer to let them make a calander of this work, but I was ignored. So I made my own calendar here on RB. I do not have any historical facts on this, but I do have a background in graphic arts, and was surprised how these iconic trademark logos have been interpretted by local sign painters.
