Mobil was an American company who broke into the British market after WWII and sold their petrol under the name of Mobilgas. They had their own fleet of tankers and this Bedford S type with its stylish tank is typical complete with its white-wall tyres and a driver in uniform it made a colourful sight in the Austerity times of the late forties and early fifties. Seen here in war-torn Birmingham in the mid-fifties.

Taking the curve. Love it, Mike, and all of the people who appear to be staring at it, too. That tank is quite stylish. I’m one who wishes white walls did not go away. I really didn’t mind all of the scrubbing when I was little. :))

I sent you a msg on your previous kind offer btw. ;)

  • Thanks Fran, people did stare at such sights then, I remember just after our family had moved to Birmingham in the late forties being in the city centre with my mother and seeing an open turquoise two tone Cadillac or similar American car cruising through the traffic with two little boys in the back seats with CREW CUTS! How I envied them, my Dad never owned a car in fact he never learnt to drive, but the sight of this immaculate exotic machine standing out amid the mostly black pre-war British cars made such an impression that we talked about it for weeks.

Wow, that must have been fancy! Sounds like right out of a magazine cover of the period!
