Atkinson a long established firm involved in the manufacture of steam lorries marketed a quality diesel engined range of heavy vehicles using proprietry components in the mid-thirties. Gardner engine, David Brown gearbox, Kirkstall axles and a rugged chassis made for a vehicle that many hauliers found ideal for the demands of the road haulage industry as it existed in those days. Here an early pre-war Atkinson six-wheeler awaits unloading at London docks in the last days of peace in 1939.

    Great painting Mike. – Ted

  • Many thanks Ted, I remember a similar Atki still working with a fairground about 30 years ago which I could have bought for £500!

Thanks Kerry, that’s Cadium Orange tinting the shadows which I like to use with a Violet its compliment on the colour wheel.

Many thanks for a lovely memory with your excellent image – my dear old Pops use to drive an Atkinson for Pitman Press and he used to take my brother and myself sometimes when he did a “straight there and back” trip

  • Thanks it’s nice to know my efforts bring back nice memories. Just sold a print of the Atki, but do have a look at my 2011 calendars.
