Before the development of the motorway network in Great Britain most trunk roads went right though the towns and cities they served and Gloucester was no exception. Here a Scammell Routeman II in the colourful livery of Smiths of Maddiston threads its way though the town on its way South with a load from north of the border.

    I can remember the days before Motorways Mike. But of course there was no where near the amount of traffic there is today or we would be in a mess.

    I love this …… my Dad use to drive Routeman Tipper for Pitchmastic when i was a kid have fond memories of going with him in school holidays & still remember the sound and smell of the hot oil and diesel.
