Bedford’s solgan was “You see them everywhere” and it was certainly so in the 1950s where a new dropside lorry is seen at the site of the 1951 Festival of Britain with the Dome of Discovery in the background. The Fof B was an attempt to show the world and the British people that, despite having spent six long years and all our wealth on saving the world from Facism, we were still a trading nation of the first order.
Up to a point it was a sucess but we somehow took our eye off the ball and by a distressing chapter of accidents in which every sector of British industry, weak and mistaken leadership from Government (especially Thactherism ) and the British people themselves all played their part in making our country become consumers instead of producers and making the term “British Made” practically vanish from our language.
A painting like this of your favourite vehicle, British or American, in oils on canvas or board would cost about £1500.
