Scammell mechanical horse. by Mike Jeffries

Currently unavailable for purchase

Alongside their huge vehicles Scammell developed the little three-wheeler mainly to be used as a tractor for local urban deliveries from railway yards. At one time they were a common sight in our towns and cities and other companies as well as the railways saw the value of the highly manouverable little lorries in narrow streets and premises.

If you thought that recycling was a new idea this scene shows that the trade was very much part of life well over fifty years ago. The little Scammells would collect all kinds of waste paper from all over London to take to Phillip’s yard in Battersea where it would be baled for return to the paper mill and re-processing.

A painting like this of your favourite vehicle, British or American, in oils on canvas or board would cost about £1500.

Since painting this from a series of black and white photos I’ve learnt that the livery was red and cream! As a result this painting on a 20”x30” canvas board with correct livery, extra detail and figures is currently for sale at £2000. Please ring 07884462140 or e-mail for details.

I think if many companies lookes at there transport now, they would realiase there is a gap in the market for a commerical vehicle of the same agility as the scammel, bit more cab comfort needed for us soft truckers of today.
    Superb painting

  • Thank you Josh, they were funny little things but at one time in Britain they were everywhere and then almost overnight they vanished.
