As late as the mid-sixties sights such as this Foden DG with its terrifying load of timber could be seen on Britain’s roads before compulsory plating of commercial vehicles in 1968 removed most of the older breed of lorry to the scrap heap. This eight wheeler probably had a Gardner six-pot that ran at 1700 max rpm with a top speed of about 28 mph which was probably quite fast enough bearing in mind the limitations of its vacuum-servo brakes.

This painting on A3 size heavyweight watercolour paper in acrylics is for sale at £500 contact me on 07884462140.

I remember the new rules coming in Mike and saying goodbye to the old wartime 3 tonners carrying about 8 tons as well as the Thames traders etc. Brakes? What brakes? Excellent painting. – Ted

  • What brakes indeed, I had a six-wheeler County Trader, tare 6ton 2 cwt + load of sand or gravel 13ton 18cwt = 20ton gross, three or four loads a day with those barely adequate brakes, it required forward thinking and a belief in luck!
