Ex-GWR 4.6.0 Castle 5031 “Totnes Castle” has steam to spare as she awaits the" right away" with the up Torbay Express while the fireman hurries to the footplate with the all important tea can.
Just above the leading carriages can be seen the dockside crane which has a grab fitted to unload coal from a coaster into railway wagons for delivery to Torquay gasworks ten miles or so up the line. In the far background lies Dartmouth surrounded by tree lined hills still little changed today despite pressure from developers to cover them in houses.
Although known as a branch line the track to Kingswear was engineered to main line standard for the heaviest locomotives up to the King class and because the station was a terminus it was provided with a turntable to turn engines for the return trip up to Paddington.

Today the station is the terminus of the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway a seven mile line traversing some of the finest scenery South Devon has to offer and the line with its steep gradients provides the fine spectacle of steam engines hard at work.

Excellent redition of the “Castle” class and the overall surrounding detail is excellent. – Ted
This is excellent Mike as is the rest of your portfolio. Well done
Gorgeous – you an almost smell it and hear the hissing !!
Hi Mike, awesome artwork and details. Your portfolio is amazing and I enjoyed your bio as well. My older brother served a LDS Mission in Manchester and photpgraphed steamed engines like this. They were in and of themselves works of art, and your painting does very well at capturing it.
Many thanks, Trenton, you are right ,the subject itself gives one a headstart. One question though, what’s LDS?

LDS stands for Latter-Day Saints or “Mormons” as we are probably known best. The official church name is; Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I was hopeful that I would get to go to Europe somewhere as well, but I ended up in the Philippines. Again Mike, your work is fantastic!
an excellent painting – full of life
Thank you, Dave, I know Kingswear station like the back of my hand.

Yes, indeed. Real painting talent. I love the old loco!!. Nicely muted background town.
Beautiful detail, and the platform essentials too – including ever-present pigeons!
Well done, Mike. And thanks for the support!
Thank YOU Colin, I appreciate your kind comments and your friendship.
