~ I created this for children, the ones in little bodies and big ones. ~
G.M.C. Trucks for Texas Project
I was asked by G.M.C.’s corporate office to make an Artistic statement about ’’ Black History in Texas’’ to be depicted on one of their trucks.
I chose some of the less acknowledged contributions made to : agricultural advancements,ranching/ farming/ oil/ music …the black woman as a pioneer…and of course as peace makers.
ON THE SIDES I wrote lyrical sayings for the children to read
( I will insert later *) and on the back of the rear view mirrors it says:Discover your roots and and grow a bright future!
I hand constructed 5 scenes to travel on top depicting the history story lines I was invoking for thought and discussions.
A series of hand painted art works were created ,then photographed, tweaked & completed in Photoshop.Upon completion submitted to a Dallas company to be transformed and applied to the vehicle as an acrylic body-shrink wrap on a brand new G.M.C. 2006 Tahoe.
I was 1 of 5 Texas artists ,only woman and only black artist selected
to create in the unprecidented ’’ Trucks for Texas “ project.
G.M.C. was Celebrating 50 years of top sales in Houston ,Texas.
It was shown in two parades ,one for Dr.King and later that spring in The Orange Show’s “Art Car Parade”. It was internationally publicized via the internet and covered by TV, radio ,newspapers and magazines.
