From Ottowa

An evening snow
A crackling fire
My thoughts drift far away

Another year
Another time
Another place and day

That stream in Montana
On a warm afternoon
Valley laughter long ago

My sister’s reflection
In the babbling brook
Living life’s ebb and flow

Our picnic lunch
Your warm, sweet smiles
Wisdom in your eyes

There are days to come
Fish to catch
Tall tales and lullabies

Grandpa’s cast
Grandma’s looks
My tear drops do not lie

Days of hope
Years of joy
Oh, the echos in my mind

Voices I love
Faces I see
It’s these things I come to find

The smell of pine
Pasty pies
Scents linger in my mind

Dusty roads
Tree-filled hills
They’re not so hard to find

The jokes we told
The laughs we shared
I loved them all so well

Memories now
Above the clouds
Warm hearts light my way

An evening snow
A crackling fire
My thoughts drift far away

Another year
Another time
Oh, how I treasure them today
Oh, how I treasure them today

From Ottowa by

On a plane ride from Ottowa to San Francisco one year, this lyric kept going through my brain. It was all about growing up in Montana in summers with family all around. It was one of those times in life where I really didn’t want to be bothered writing it all down. But when lyrics come, they come, and they nag me until they are on paper. So on the plane ride, I wrote these down. And, as always, I am glad I did. These are for everyone who has special memories of their family’s interactions during varous events. Mine mostly centered around fly fishing under Montana’s Big Sky.
