Campfire Tales by Ed Moore

Campfire Tales by

In the Western United States – Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and California, cowboys still sit around the campfire at night and swap tall tales of days gone by. And when the tales run out, and the weariness from a day’s ride sets in, about the time the campfire dies down, everyone beds down before another day’s work. Campfire tales are some of my most cherished memories. And I hope they are for you, too. I suppose I am old fashioned, but I enjoyed telling stories and interacting that way – and I still do. This was featured in Cowboy / Cowgirl Art in July 2009, and in Artistic, Creative & Very Talented in April 2010. (Acrylic and spray paint. © Ed Moore. All Rights Reserved.)

We had a cabin in the woods on a river with a wood stove, and steps going up to the bedroom that could be pulled up on a pully out of the way if somebody brought a record player or a radio to dance to.. The grown-ups played cards and conversed and there were always several eyes on us kids as we splashed around in the cold water. No telephone, no TV ever, and just the occasional radio or wind-up record player. Wonderful times to remember! We’ve lived in amazing times, Ed; we really have!

  • Hi…I agree…there were so many nights I spent at my grandparents house in Butte, Montana, just talking and playing games. And we would talk on our way out to fly fish. And talk coming back. And talk trying to figure out what flies to use. And laugh. And joke. I won’t comment on today’s generation cause somehow it always seems to work out ok, but I will say I would never trade those days for anything. They are ingrained in me soul.

    Great image Ed
I think we would all love to be under the stars, sharing tales by the campfire, but some folk just grow up and forget the childhood fantasys !

  • Hi George…Thank you! Yes, a lot of people seem to forget. But I always told my kids that I am an 18 year old trapped in an aging body! And I still feel that way! Well, maybe it’s a 42 year old by now! Lol.
