Artist's Description

It is inconceivable to think of a medieval knight not having a horse; the two go hand in hand, the one working in unison with the other, helping to define and clarify the other’s role in the medieval scheme of things. Though we can accept the idea of a knight fighting on foot or assaulting a wall from a ladder – or even of a knight unhorsed – his mount is nevertheless there in the background. A knight with no horse would be hardly a knight at all; as a fighter, he would be ridiculous, absurd, useless, just as a modern army tank would be wholly ineffective without a motor.
Ewart Oakeshott, A Knight And His Horse, 2nd Edition, 1998
