Traditional style hand painted digital oil painting

James was born in 1946 in the then small town of Irvine in north Ayrshire Scotland and learnt how to paint from his father using oils and although finding this satisfying knew that something was not right with this medium for him. After a period of time James at last found what he was looking for in a method of traditional styled hand painting using a digital oil painting medium.
James has been painting using this method which is totally different from digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model.

My work is hand painted digital painting and is an art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and software. Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in that it does not involve the computer rendering from a model. Hand painting techniques are used to create the digital oil painting directly on my PC, by using a Wacom tablet, a stylus pen and ArtRage painting software. The Wacom tablet can be compared to a canvas or watercolor paper surface. The stylus pen is my paintbrush.
Brush techniques include:- oil brush, which I have set up to different settings of pressure, loading and thinner levels and also customize as required in both square and round brush. Paint tube, mainly for background work. Palette knife set to many varying levels of pressure and shaping. Airbrush, used only for shading work. Brush strokes are often visible in my work.
Painting technique – As with traditional oil painter’s digital oil flows from your brain to your hand and brush eye co-ordination, which brush, pressure, stroke, colour is an instantaneous happening on the canvas.
The passion for art has produced a varied portfolio of art for James. His greatest passion though is for horses and figurative work.
