Touched by Art

A little story on how a simple work of art can warm the hearts and souls of three people at opposite ends of the world.

I received an email from the photographer of a stock image that I used as a resource in a digital painting I did to accompany a poem I wrote. He was so thrilled and elated about the painting that I had done from his image, and told me he was going to purchase a large print for his daughter’s birthday. The photographer is Déz Magnér of Sweden, and it turns out that this is his own hand holding his daughters hand in the stock photo.

I was so touched by both his comments, and realizing that my artwork would soon be hanging on the wall of the subjects within the artwork. No greater gift or compliment could I possibly receive on an artwork, than for the subjects within an artwork to be so thrilled by it that they were willing to purchase it to hang on the wall of their own home. Now every time I view this painting of mine, I will smile to know that it is providing joy to the subjects in the artwork halfway around the world.

Needless to say, I promptly emailed Déz back thanking him, and attached the full-size image of the artwork to the email, as well as a copyright release to reproduce, distribute, and sell the artwork himself if he wished. Although Déz did not create the painting, nor write the poem that it illustrates, I told him I considered this artwork a collaborative effort… as it was his photo that brought back the memory of my own daughter holding my hand when she was young, and thus, provided me with inspiration for both the painting and the poem.

So here the three of us are… separated by half the globe, yet each day we warm one another’s hearts and souls with the art that we have shared between us. There is now a third unseen component to the artwork that is more beautiful than the artwork itself. I have provided both the artwork and poem below.

Please lead me to my future
As I count on you to guide
Hold my hand firm, but yet gently
So I may walk along beside

Please don’t walk too fast before me
As I can not match your stride
And the distance it creates
May find our holding hands now pryed

Please leave me not in darkness
As I fear what I can’t see
Be my beacon shining brightly
Illuminate those things for me

Please pass to me your wisdom
As you’ve walked this path before
And secure with your knowledge
I am free to path explore

Please teach me solid values
Love, peace, passion, and much more
And right way to use these tools
To leave world better than before

Please lead me to my future
As I count on you to guide
So in the future when I look back
I’ll be filled with love and pride
