*The isotope creates the change
Throughout the universe
It changes what a mass does weigh
As neutrons do disperse
Neutrons escape the nuclei
Form process of decay
Strong force the neutrons do defy
As they do break away
The isotope does rearrange
It’s atom’s properties
The only thing it does not change
Is change itself I see*
This fractal artwork was inspired by the thought that everything in the universe is in a constant state of decay, and that the only true thing in the universe that doesn’t change… is change itself. There is nothing that can be done to change this fact, as the very design of nature assures this in the form of isotopes of atoms. Isotopes assure that nature remains in a constant state of change. Given this… I guess that means that we all have a lot of spare change :)
Atomic nuclei consist of protons and neutrons bound together by the strong nuclear force. Because protons are positively charged, they repel each other. Neutrons, which are electrically neutral, allow some separation between the positively charged protons, reducing the electrostatic repulsion. Neutrons also stabilize the nucleus because at short ranges they attract each other and protons equally by the strong nuclear force, and this extra binding force also offsets the electrical repulsion between protons. For this reason, one or more neutrons are necessary for two or more protons to be bound into a nucleus.
The artwork portrays those extra neutrons in isotope atoms that eventually break free in the process of radioactive decay. The original is 4800 × 4800 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. It was created in Apophysis 3D Hack. The gradient was created in ApoMap, a gradient editor commonly used with Apophysis. Because the original is so large and difficult to see over the internet, I have included a few detail cutaways below. The detail cutaways are shown at 33% of the artworks full-size.
