*I want to live,
I want to give
I’ve been a miner
for a heart of gold.
It’s these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old.

I’ve been to Hollywood
I’ve been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean
for a heart of gold
I’ve been in my mind,
it’s such a fine line
That keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old.

Keep me searching
for a heart of gold
You keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I’m growing old.
I’ve been a miner
for a heart of gold.*

Neil Young, from ‘Harvest’-1972

This fractal artwork was inspired by the song ‘Heart of Gold’ by Neil Young. ‘Heart of Gold’ is from the 1972 album ‘Harvest’, and is Neil Young’s only number one hit single in his long musical career. Rolling Stone ranked it #297 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. It features the back-up vocals of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt.

This was one of the songs I learned to play on the guitar when I was very young, and every time I hear the song it takes me back. Now that I am becoming an old fart myself, I find a great new meaning in the lyrics… as now they reflect the way I have tried to live my life. The definition given for the phrase is ‘signifies a person or being completely without malice, whose nature is loving or caring. This may be how they live, or otherwise; the expression relates to their inner nature rather than any misguided or problematic actions they may perform.’

The original is 3000 × 3000 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. It was created in Tierazon. Because the original is so large and difficult to see over the internet, I have included a couple of detail cutaways below.

I am an artist, a photographer, a writer, a musician, a composer, a craftsman, a designer, and a programmer. I have been recognized for various works in all of these areas over the last half century.

how do you get a heart in a fractal? I want to learn.

  • It differs depending what fractal software you are using.

Basically, the heart is formed using a modified Fibonacci spiral, that creates one half of the heart. By creating the fractal as a ‘bilateral’ type, both sides of the heart are rendered. That’s the basic mathematical concept as it applies to fractals.

There are many other ways to produce heart fractals as well, although much more mathematically complex.

Many fractal applications also have built in formulas for hearts.
    What application are you using?
