This red barn is located in West Knoxville, Tennessee. West Knoxville is one of those growing areas that, at this point in its history, has both segments of city and country living. I have a painting, A Little Bit of Country, that I’ll post soon. The composition of this acrylic painting illustrates how city and country aspects co-exist here in the west end of Knoxville, Tennessee.

As an artist I enjoy painting and photographing segments of rural life. Country living became a new world for me back in the sixties when we moved from Chicago, Illinois to East Tennessee. I want to capture what I now see before country living vanishes… at least in my area!

Can’t wait to see the painting Bob, as the photo just hollars “paint me.”

  • That’s funny Jim, thanks! At heart, I’m a pure country boy. As an artist, I feel fortunate to live in an area where I can see the transformation from country to city taking place. Right now, West Knoxville is somewhere in the middle – as are other places in the growing South. I would guess even down your way in Jacksonville, N.C., growth has taken place over the years. If so, I would recognize some expansion. I was stationed at Camp Lejeune back in the late 70’s. And I had an uncle who retired as a marine, living out his days in Jacksonville. Anyway, here in this area of east Tennessee, I’ve seen gravel roads turned in to paved roads, single lane paved roads expanded to double lane paved roads and so on.
Yes, I have to face the grim reality that my area is growing up as I’m growing older…but it is what it is. lol

Nice one Bob, I’m waiting for the painting !!!

  • Thanks George, you’re too kind. As I replied to Jim Phillips, I feel fortunate to live in an area where I can watch this area grow from country to city. I don’t want to give a wrong image here. We have a city, Knoxville. West Knoxville is a growing expansion of Knoxville. But, West Knoxville seems to be coming into its own as a community, consuming the countryside as it develops. And, as an artist, I want to capture some of that transformation.
