ABOUT MY PAINTING

Tennessee Sodbuster

Who is a sodbuster? A sodbuster is a farmer who works the soil. He plows the dirt, plants the seeds, and reaps the harvest. A Tennessee sodbuster is, then, a Tennessee farmer. The term sodbuster, however, is referenced to farmers of earlier days, from around the mid to late 1800s. Today, we refer to farmers as … well … farmers. My pastel painting represents sodbusters of that era.

“The term, sodbuster, came about during the American Civil War with the introduction of the Homestead Act in 1862. This law allowed U.S. citizens to file an application to live on and own up to 160 acres of unused federal land outside the original colonies.” -The History of the Sodbuster, eHow.com

When folks from the eastern parts of the U.S. arrived out West (the western areas of the United States) to become new landowners, they often found themselves at odds with cattlemen over land usage. These new Sodbusters of the “Old West” had different intentions for their land other than raising, driving, and selling cattle.
