" All aboard the night train! "
Ah-ha! Lo, bed rattling, it ran…
Men, it was a journey through the dark,
With hot dash! Enjoyment-augurer, Ark,
It bore us boldly in a land of dream; Idea,
Unreasonable toy, odd ballad mirified!
Night sped fast – no tiredness felt;
Delights, on stiffness patterned;
Metronomic lineaments of sound,
Flute-sine common denominators,
Charm us north. Ah, potent! Tight vigour’s
Our straight, then smooth-curving, path -
Time pausing under its rapid wheels,
Weight unimpeded! Rail-apt sun rises;
In towns the people sleep, still:
Low, helpless, polite penitents.
A whistle blows; we whoop too,
“Oh, Wow!”, with slow sleep taboo.
Race boyishly, lovestruck Art!
They set clocks by our arrival.
