Red Admiral butterfly, Vanessa atalanta .

I love the sleek fur of its body, and banded antennae.

In this position we are seeing the left wing edge-on, the right wing full-on.

The underside of the wings is strikingly different: it has a mottled pattern resembling broken bark.

Note, this is the species known by the name ‘Red Admiral’ in the UK; that same name is used in New Zealand for a similar-looking species, Vanessa gonerilla (synonym of Bassaris gonerilla).

Wednesday 7th October, about 4.30p.m. BST.
Cardenden railway station, Fife, Scotland.
