Spiderkin 1 by armadillozenith

This is my own photo, adapted – not a coloured sketch. The hand-drawn effect was an outcome I hadn’t planned but was very pleased by!
Using the Serif 9 software package, I had applied Effects>Sharpen+Sharpen more, then Image>Adjust>Image size to enlarge fourfold; which does not generally produce such a drawn-by-hand appearance.

I believe this to be a male Zebra spider, also called Zebra jumper, or Zebra jumping spider: Salticus scenicus, one of the Salticidae (jumping spiders).. about 6mm long. They dart about in sudden spurts.

I saw him in Rosyth Halt railway station, northbound-platform shelter, Fife, Scotland, about 3pm BST, 25th June 2009.

He was not interested in a dead fly I offered, but he readily stepped onto my finger, which surprised me. Apparently this is characteristic of the species: they are curious and entertainingly responsive, not shy as one might expect.

I think it’s a cute creature!

    Cute little guy.

  • Ta, Kim! It is a male spider, but when I look at this image I easily see it as a sort of fabric girl-doll – without legs, with abundant plaited tresses up in the air! ..Those two big eyes, and little black line of a ‘mouth’ 8 )
