Elspeth took this picture for me, showing the result of my experiments by the waterwheel at Craigencalt Farm, in the early months of 2009.
I’m a volunteer at the Ecology Centre sited there. While the waterwheel was out of action, motionless for a while awaiting repair, I’d set out to grow some icicles.
I had redirected the pipe – which normally feeds the waterwheel – so as to spray and trickle water onto the metal frame and grass nearby, and also over branches I had set in place for that purpose – using hollow plant stems to channel the flow.
I aimed to get a steady drip or moderate spray on each area, a wetting light enough to quickly freeze and then progressively build up.
When the hoped-for cold weather came, this preparation paid off in these icicle formations.
