Artist's Description

Do you see here the joyful face I see?
..the bodily form of a robot-like living creature?
..with a chamaeleonine or dinosaurian profile?
..happily active, doing..what, exactly?
..with its thin arm reaching to an.. easel?

Perhaps there are several ways to see features here..!

I Sing the Body Electric! is a 1969 collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury. The book takes its title from the 1855 poem of that name by Walt Whitman, of which that is also the first line.

I had not read the poem before, until researching it as the title for this image; I have found it amazing.
And so apt..

The image shows part of a Singer sewing-machine used in a factory. Here, people who are able and disabled work together at upholstery, woodwork, making soft furnishings, packaging items, and reconditioning disabled living equipment.

Location: Donibristle (Hillend) Industrial Estate, by Dalgety Bay, Fife, Scotland; April 2009.
