The Posers

Gem and Twinkie think they are siblings. After a very long (and very hyper) play time they decided to be kind and pose for me. We were being lazy on the couch in my bedroom and it was one of those moments that I glanced over and saw this and ran for the camera. Such sweet babies. :o)
Twinkie is our Kitty that my son rescued from his ex-wife. (who wanted him to destroy him) :(

Does anyone have suggestions on how I can avoid the evil eye (lol) that the flash causes in pets or animals?
Thanks CJ for helping me resolve this issue!!

    just priceless …Gem is looking pretty healthy…it’s a keeper…steve

Thanks Steve. The vet gave Gem, Jewell and Twinkie a perfect report card on health last week. Today I take the newest member of our household in for a check up. A teeny tiny kitten my son found in a cemetery on Halloween night. Maybe 3 weeks old and looks as if she’s had a rough life. I think my home is becoming an animal shelter! lol

Lisa waht a real adroable picture from two very beautiful animals.

I am shocked to think someone wants to destroy the little kitty….disgusting ...evil eye on the EX….lol

Speaking of evil eye ahem Redeye casued by the flash, yes you can avoid this in animals as well as humans.

If your falsh has a swivel facility bounce the flash from the ceiling or against the wall. Alternatively you can take a paper tissue and split it. Take a small piece and fix it infront of the flash to diffuse it.
Alternatively, your camera may have a a facility to avoid red eye, whcih you need to activate, Check the Manual.

If all of the above are not possible, then you can remove it with your picture software after you have taken it. i can not give you detailed instructions as I do not know which software you are using, again check the manual or user Guide for the software.

  • Lisa Jones replied

Wow! Thanks for all the info CJ! I’ve managed to avoid redeye in humans for the most part, but can’t seem to in animals. My editing software for some reason won’t remove it in animals (PS elements 4.0). I will check my camera to see if there is a setting on it and try the tissue thing. Thanks so much!! Lisa

The retina of an animal in particular in cats is very different and becomes very reflective.

The only way you can really avoid this is by bouncing the flash or possibly by the tissue method.

Sorry to bombard you with message her, but you can remove the brightness in PSE 4.0 It just needs some skill using the layers and the paintbrush with opacity around 65% and slowly paint in the eye, leaving a small white dot in the direction of light source. You may wish to check the dog

  • Lisa Jones replied

All of your hints and suggestions are wonderful CJ and I really appreciate them! I will work on this in PSE this afternoon and let you know how it goes. Lisa

if the software does not remove the “evil eye” ...lol I sometimes have that in animals that are going blind at the SPCA where I take the photos even with the filter on the flash I can’t get rid of it….so I go and dab a paintbruch on the eye in black and take the softener tool to smooth it out and than apply a little dab of whit on the black part so it looks like a reflection…works great …. but anyway Gem and Twinkle are adorable!
