Wizened

Tell me sages old and wrinkly
when the starlight filters silver
and the breeze is soft and light
when the crickets chime with futures
and our oceans frisk and dive

Why do people down the ages
not sing sweetly after dinner
and the dogs they love so dearly
live in smelly pits of mud

Why do women humming softly
not eat offerings of love
and hard men who watch them naked
creep along alone and drool

Why do children cute and cuddly
not play games and giggle joy
while their fairy toes and fingers
snap with hooves of greedy eyes

Oh, I know that answers bounce by nature
and that trees are really God
that sagging flesh on human faces
brings them heaven’s gift and pardon

That truth gracing hidden valleys
in the folded crease at midnight
is the same in Grecian taverns
at the bottom of a glass

I know when love spins elfin wishes
when souls and feet could meet
is a time when dancing fairies
wing their kisses brushed and dusted

But I don’t know wise and wondrous
when the job is done and sealed
why hounds with bloodied voices
snap their leash and belch and tear

Why men love with breathless passion
and their courage trembles whitely
When a mermaid under water
sings their blood red viens to rust
