Home One

For a project on homelessness in the inner city of Sydney. Have reshot this several times now and I think this one is close to what I was looking for.

I am ging to rename the images for this project ‘Home’ because these are_people’s homes…or imply ‘home’...even a blanket in a park could be a ‘home’. Home as _we might know it doesn’t mean that another’s choice of ‘home’ is not also a legitimate place to belong, or at least feel connected to or have a sence of ownership of.

Home One belongs to the following groups:

Street Photography and Photojournalism, The Urban Environment and Theatrical and Staged Photography Available for sale as

Greeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints

Is this in the CBD somewhere.
We are always being watched, i like the combination of strong vertical and horizontal lines.

  • Robert Knapman replied

This is in a back alley off Albion Street Glenn, near Central Station. A quite little corner but the back entrance to a very large company. I’m sure they were watching me .)

robert… this is a bone chilling image… haven’t figured out why yet…. but it speaks to me of scarey futures that are here already… perhaps why you haven’t named it either? b

  • Robert Knapman replied

You snuck in before I named in butch. Yes the chill of the desert – the city desert maybe…

@ Glenn – this is everywhere in the CBD (not trying to be silly – just look around!)

Nice one Robert – really nicely exposed. Like the shirt :)

  • Robert Knapman replied

Cheers Sara, I think this might be the one (at least one of….)

where ever i hang my hat, that’s my home… or, as with this scenario, jacket… Was the jacket/shirt hung as a prop? Either way, it certainly adds impact to a seedy, city story. Awesome series Robert, both the glam and the gloomy.

  • Robert Knapman replied

Hey Jen. You got it in one! I had one of those 50’s gentleman’s hats hanging up too. However the shirt is clearly enough for the message (well one possible message). Its my shirt and so yep a prop. Cheers hon .)

This is the start of an outstanding series from you Robert. Those cameras make this so scary…

  • Robert Knapman replied

Why thanksyou halftone. I am enjoying this journey….

    “yep a prop”

And much easier to carry around than that sofa I used!

  • Robert Knapman replied

Damn right Sara but sofa’s rock. Hope your ‘shoot’ went well on the weekend.

A good shot… and I like your thoughts/description too. The surveillance camera pointed down to this ‘spot’ is a sort of ‘empty security blanket’ watching over such an exposed space, as if its there just to witness the vulnerability of the occupant…. a bit sad. I think your exploration, study and exposure of such circumstances and locations is a positive thing…

Such a stylish series. Not sure still if I can see the homeless aspect in these, but that is probably personal taste, but as isolating city images they are stunning.

I think it portrays the feeling that you set out to do – and addresses issues so much of society wishes to ignore

the buildings even look cold and damp, brilliant idea btw. Also there are the squalid rooming houses.. but you have captured the whole vibe well in this shot
