Strength
This was a spontaneous shot taken at a local Adelaide cafe on Rundle Street East in Kent Town one day when I was out with Dan. It was included in the series ‘When He’s Away’ and was a part of the ‘Living Queer in Adelaide’ group exhibition for the 2006 Feast Arts Festival there (Exibited at the Town Hall) I really like this one – human body against unyielding cement wall and rigid geometric lines.
The theme that I was working on with the shots in this series was an analysis and exploration of sexuality – but more specifically gay male sexuality and the universal themes relating to the divide between public and private, acceptibility and unacceptibility, connection and disconnection, and of course human vulnerability / sensitivity and the structures and systems which confine or limit this.

This is exquisite! First time i saw it i felt an overwhelming sadness… sublime and evocatvie!
Robert Knapman
Thanks Shannyn. This is actually my favourite of those here. I’m loving what people get from some of my shots – never had feedback before. My intent was to evoke loss, longing or vulnurability. Cheers.
Adrian Rachele
Very strong Robert. Great feeling to this.
Brett Squires
Wonderful image.. Strength, symmetry and entrapment. Perfectly realized.
Amanda J Slack...
Wonderful. Well captured. Love the way the lines in the wall are off centre, pulls everything together.
Robert Knapman
Thanks Adrien, Brett and Amanda. Have to say the positive feedback and affirmation here is far better than random dummy spits – if you know what I mean. So cheers :)
Shanina Conway
This is wonderful, it’s like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders…lovely lighting and textures too.
Jessica Tremp
i love the texture on the wall and the guys t-shirt against it…
marieancolie
how heavy is the world :(
Love the rough texture of the walls.
(I followed the link in “textures” on The Age)
So many stories are untold here.
Raul Brzic
Great shoot Robert.
I welcome your wide range of style in photography.
FoxyLox
Caged… the outcome of when perfection faces imperfection. the perfect symmetry of the man’s form clashes, yet tones into the scarred wall. A man divinely created in a perfected image is being restricted in an imperfect world (“living queer in Adelaide”).
Paul Vanzella
The shot says it all – yes, I love the framing of the image and the underlying texture through it, love the wall and skin tone. Great shot!
magic1gal
This has such a wonderful sentiment. Reminds me of the sacrifice of love and devotion.

I like this piece very much. I like the tone and texture of the wall. If you hadn’t told us it was in a cafe., I would have thought he might be praying (but whose to say you can’t pray in a cafe). Very deep emotionally. Wonderful job.
WOLF
this looks like a great mood you were in.

RoughDiamond
so very sad and brilliantly captured
SNik
such captures speak of the one behind the camera., a keen and searching mind, probably compassionate. unfortunately, they are rarely appreciated due to lack of multi-bright-color pathos and superficial “beaty”.
Robert Knapman
Thanks everyone and thanks SNik – well seen ;)

Very evocative, but the title puzzles me. I, too, felt despair.
MuscularTeeth
good shot.
hello from adelaide too !
Robert Knapman
Thanks everyone. Very cool to have this on the ‘Featured’ page. Bluerabbit the title I chose as a contradition to people’s perception. I like to create potential alternative realities and interpretations in my work and the title was a pathway to unveiling these alternatives.
This is about the strength to face it, the power to continue, the resilience not to go under…and also the strength to see…the strength simply to be…The wall also has an innate power – sometimes a power than is projected onto it. But it is just a man made wall after all and can be ‘unmade’ .)
Robert Knapman
Hello MuscularTeeth :)
