If you look closely, you’ll see the umbilical cord still hanging from this baby. Mom and baby were a long way off, well separated from the herd. The baby was taking his first steps which were very wobbly and spastic. Happily I had my camera on burst and just let it crank away, the quickly switched to video so I also have a short movie clip. The next day when we past the river bed the pair were no where in sight. (Hippopotamus amphibius)

After being widowed, I needed to find something new to occupy my mind. I chose photography. That turned into an obsession, compounded by my love of the artistic license provided by Photoshop and the many other artful programs that help us explore all the facets of turning a photo into art.

how cute! what an amazing thing to see in person!

  • It was amazing. Couldn’t see the imbilical cord with my binocs, so didn’t know how new this calf was until I got the pics home and into the computer.
