Artist's Description

Of all the lions we saw, this male and his brother impressed me the most. They reigned over a pride of at least 15 females and cubs in the western Serengeti NP, Tanzania, Africa. A bold maneuver by our driver put us in the lap of the pride and this male and his brother simply gave us a distainful stare and then went back to their business. (Pantero Leo)

The black-maned lions of the Serengeti are said to be larger and more fearsome than the pale maned males and are making a decided change in the genetic makeup of the lions of the Serengeti.

It took me a long time to decide how I wanted to treat his portrait. I took him from the grassy plains to a black background, then faded his body out with a bit of low opacity black.
