Sunrise on Vancouver Harbor, BC, Canada by

I did a lot of traveling back when 1 megapixel was the best there was. Now I look sadly at those old pics and wish for more pixels. Happily, one can add pixels, but for most of the old 1 “Meggers” you just get pixelated.

As I’ve learned PS Elements, I’ve tried new things. So here is the redo. It’s been saturated, treated to Selection and High Pass Filter for the buildings, while the sky and water got a taste of the Impressionist brush. Then the whole thing got a couple of hits with Oil Pastel effects and Canvas texture.

Challenge Winner Harbours Retired and Happy 7/6/09

After being widowed, I needed to find something new to occupy my mind. I chose photography. That turned into an obsession, compounded by my love of the artistic license provided by Photoshop and the many other artful programs that help us explore all the facets of turning a photo into art.

  • Thanks so much. I was just delighted that I was able to recover this image from low pixel hell, even if it was artsy.

This would look lovely painted on a mirror : ) (or a great wall.) I like it :)

  • Oh, if I could paint. And painting over any mirror is an improvement.

The pixel tiles work really well for a picture of ‘the city of glass’ – there are so many glass buildings downtown that it fits in well. The watercolour also gives it that true Vancovuer rainy feel.

  • Thanks. This just sort of appeared when a friend and I were playing around. Since we never write down what we do, we’re not positive which effects were left. I don’t think this effect would work on many things, but love it on this.

hey this is excellent. i have heaps of 1 meggers and it is nice to know they can have a new lease of life!

  • Thanks so much for the feature. This was my first save and I’ve learned a half dozen ways since to bring them back. One just hates to junk them when they make great slide shows. OK, so you’re not likely to make 11 × 14 prints out of them, but you can get 8 x10s and screen resolution is fine. I might go back and try new stuff on this one, but I really like the pixels in it.

This is a beautiful save on your old photo.

  • Thanks. My shots of the same harbor last week have no color (dark and rainy) so I may have to play with some of them.
