Indian Roper by Linda Sparks

There’s always one face in the crowd that draws the eye and this Tohono O’odham Indian calf roper was the one. Linda Gregory and I thought we were going to a PowWow at the San Xavier mission, but discovered instead a Jackpot Roping on the reservation. I caught this shot as he was pouring a cup of joe at a very ugly roach coach, so gave him a better background, using a pic of an old corral fence taken several years prior.

One chance, camera under my arm and a quick glance at the LCD before tripping the shutter. I take only candid shots of people and the folks he posed for later got a much less natural look.

After being widowed, I needed to find something new to occupy my mind. I chose photography. That turned into an obsession, compounded by my love of the artistic license provided by Photoshop and the many other artful programs that help us explore all the facets of turning a photo into art.

Outstanding, Linda. I didn’t get any pictures of him.

  • Thanks. I took this one under my arm with the LCD screen. That was the only chance I got.

Great capture of this very proud looking man.

  • The twinkle in his eye gives away the boy he once must have been.

Linda, Great shot from under your arm. I like what you have done with the background too. I’ve not given much thought to changing a pictures background but I’m getting inspired.

  • Thanks John. When the background is a horse trailer or a weinie wagon, you have to do something.

    Please add tag: aorbmarfeatures….thank you.

  • My many thanks, again. This guy is one of my favorites, but I’m learning how to make him better. He may show up again later with new background.
