Lessons on Aged Paper

The pages had faded,
curled at the corners
and tinged brown from time
passed and
outlooks elapsed
like corners of the mind
were quicksand traps
you sank in
and
suffocated fast

Finding these far gone
forgotten sentiments
transcribed from
my naive heart
gave a new life
to what once was buried
you grab the vine
climbing

Your laugh was like songs
playing out on summer radio
car cruises
leaning in to kiss these lips
and tickle my cheek
with butterfly lashes
the passion never passive
as I dodged shaft stroke
car crashes
…and you still laughing

You would sleep so still
angelic in morning rays
splayed over your
silk soft face
and murmur sweet sounds
until finally
arising
smiling at my
adoring eyes

These faded pages
professed feelings
in degrees
that now seem alien to me
Where the depth was
made by way of
unscathed flesh &
unscorched earth
before loves true mesh
had lost it’s worth…

….and turned to the worst
….before this letter provoked rebirth

Years breed wisdom
and conversely distrust
as accrued age gains knowledge
feelings gain rust
or forgotten to us
who left them idle
while survival
meant denying
the urge to let you in
ever again

So I pour through
the words I wrote long ago
and find that I can learn
so much from what I didn’t
know then
and here I’ll begin again…..

I found some old letters to a girlfriend…the words were so genuinely uncompromised and sincere. It was almost as if someone else wrote them.
I liked that old side of me and decided it was time for a comeback!!

This really touches my heart…. and here I’ll begin again…. I’ve done a great deal of the same things you write of… reading old journals and letters. They are extremely enlightening. Good luck on your journey!

I’ve never been able to keep up with a journal, but I feel that a lot of my poems are written to my future self…like lifelines…reminders you know? Loved this steve!

This poem is like an awakening…every words held it’s own light. I think, as you read through those old pages and see a person that you may have forgotten all about..that this was the perfect time to be found again.

That last stanza really pulls all of what was and what we are becoming together. You are a word artist indeed.
