Once upon a time a man had this idea to make his village tidier.
He told his neighbor his idea who asked him “How much for your idea?”
The man replied “ I think good ideas are always free.”
His neighbor then told their neighbor and eventually everyone in the village knew.
People talked freely for days.
The man with the idea began to tidy up his backyard.

Eager villagers gathered in the town square and soon people were calling out their thoughts about how to make their village tidy.
Everyone was passionate for their voice to be heard so they talked a little louder and louder.
Soon there was a lot of shouting and no-one could make sense of what anybody was saying.
In the meantime one content man was quietly sitting on his back porch feeling weary but very pleased how tidy he’d made his own backyard.

Flash Fiction Challenge 8
The Theme
“Where did our freedom go?”

Feelings and words fall on to the page
Sometimes they bite back
Sometimes they tug on our sleeve
Sometimes they have a cheeky grin
They stay once a page has found them
Words are faithful to us even in the dark

Wonderful write, karen; and I am certain such a man would then invite his neigbors over, not wanting to sit an island-of-self. Of course the risk is, some might not agree with what he calls tidy. It is a complex subject. xx

  • Hi Joe
Complex…..ain’t that the word of the moment me thinks…
Yep and stepping back to take a breather is the way to go with it me thinks too…xx

Karen-Sue indeed a very brilliant write. It does raise the question though as to whether we actually do have freedom and then so poignantly points out that chaos erupts when each can say their say without consideration to one another… Again it brings me back to the structures of Society… if we all could do as we please it would simply fall apart as where would we draw the line? Does it have to fall into chaos and indeed do we have to separate ourselves to the point of becoming a hermit because of what others force upon us? The old saying No man is an island to himself is very apt here… Great write dearest Karen-Sue!

  • Hi Betty
I guess tolerance and freedom are not always a happy pairing.
When we are passionate about something we can lose our thread of reasonableness and accountability and act not how we would want to be treated ourselves…well that is how it seems to me.
I am not immune from this ‘disease’ either. It takes effort and a different kind of maturity to keep the focus without being pin-holed into making it about scoring points.
Thank you for your very reasonable thoughts here. I very much appreciate you stopping by. xx

he he love it. All talk no action. This is an accurate depiction, Imo.

  • Exactly …. and sometimes the action is to simply wait and take a breather as well me thinks! :O)
