"Dank sadness smoking dead wood" he and she said

Her depression bores them
The way she can’t get life to play a sweeter tune

His lack of get up and go sends them the other way
The smell of his dank sadness

She may truly desire to be more light and bubbly
an unknown subject in her text books
a page not fully read
tone deaf

He may dream of building a castle
wood piling up
a match away from it all going up in smoke
dead wood

They lick the bottom of the glass together
residue in solitude
still alone residing in the same place and time
Shun them
Shunned we are in our own light
Soloist for a flightless life

Wing your battered wings
beach yourself upon my shore
When the glass falls
Welcome
Winner in being the best you can

The story is old and used
yellowed paper in tattered edge
Heroes are hailed as royal debutantes
I will kiss the hand of the restless soul
my kindred and Savior

I believe that we learn more about what is real from those that have lived closer to the edge of nothing and return to show us they have survived….

Feelings and words fall on to the page
Sometimes they bite back
Sometimes they tug on our sleeve
Sometimes they have a cheeky grin
They stay once a page has found them
Words are faithful to us even in the dark

A very deep insightful write KS. The unsung heroes are the ones doing the best that they can.

  • Many thanks for reading this Woody.
I have a special place in my thoughts for the quiet steady achiever or unsung heroes…. the little people who keep the cogs turning while often no praise is received…:)) x

that conclusion is breath taking. Me thinks you’s exactly correct, a fortuitous aligning of the minds. Issue is that in order to truly embrace and celebrate the other, one must first do so for oneself. I don’t think that many get that far. It is far easier to look at the other and say, “Hell, at least I’m not as fucked up as him.” I reply, “Actually, you are far worse off, as your brains and compassion with them leaked all over the new fucking rug. Can’t cure stupid.” xo, great write! RBg

  • You know you have my vote on this Rusty…embracing our negatives is the trick me thinks, not to say we keep them but we don’t chastise for them and maybe we find our strengths at the same time.
I have had a day of realizing I made a rod for my own back with the attitude I left with this morning….silly me…it really made my day long and tiring… xxx

You’ve written a deeply moving and beautiful piece. While all of it, every line stands out, it is the last two stanzas that paint the images so well.
