Turtle in a Bubble
Sometimes it is better to be lucky than to be good. I did position myself to silhouette the turtle against the sun, but it was pure luck that my initial large exhalation bubble got between me and the turtle and picked up the animal’s reflection.
This was shot at Darwin Island in the Galapagos, May, 2007.

Unbelievable shot George! Did you see the Hammerheads at Darwin Island?
George Cathcart replied
We saw hammerheads, but not the big schools, just individuals.

Brilliant, beautiful shot. I think quite often outstanding wildlife photography involves a lot of luck. You have to have the skill to have yourself in the right place at the right time and the patience to wait for the shot, but also having the luck that the wild animal will actually do what you think it will (or better) and the shot actually works…..but the bubble…....now that is just awesome! Well done
George Cathcart replied
Thanks Chris, I agree that skill plays a part in this, but I sometimes think there is a skill beyond the definable, almost a sixth (or seventh) sense that makes the difference, and it’s not just luck if it happens often enough. I just know that some of my best photos often surprise me, because I usually am not “thinking” about them when they happen, and the harder I think about them, the less likely it is that I will get th shot I’m thinking about. Let if flow…
