This was my first painting of food. Cooked for my husband and then photographed. It was a great challenge and has had a few laughs since.
Acrylic on canvas. Original sold.

I am a contemporary realist artist who paints in oils and acrylics.
I have always been interested in branded items so in 2011 I began a series of chocolate paintings. My next series of paintings will focus on SWEETS

Imagine if you’d made your husband wait for his breakfast while you painted this :) Good job you took a photo instead or he would have starved to death. You feed him well by the way :)

  • It would have been a bit cold for sure! lol I always work from photos.

Someone once said, "There two types of artists – those who use photos and those who use photos but won’t admit it. You and I are the honest type :)

The question is, was the photograph as good as the painting? Let me postulate that for a moment, I bet it wasn’t. The painting gives a little more of the artist to the image, a photograph needs much more management, and we all know management is a cold-fish!

This is a dish fit for a king, just let me have one of the sausages, haha. This is a lovely image, it has great feeling. I have just realised what makes it (and the rest of your paintings) stand out, it is the shadows! Not only are they subtle dark areas, but their colour tends to the blue too.

Great attention to detail April, great interpretation, great image!

  • Thank you Harry and great observation! Painting is a wonderful teacher. A learning process through which I have picked up many tips in the last four years. As any artist reading this will verify, when you look closely enough at something, which painting realistically demands whether from a photo or not, you soon realise that there is colour in everything (especially shadows). If you can get the fundamentals down in a painting (good choice of subject matter, composition, shapes, negatives spaces, highlights and shadows you’re 60% on the way to a pleasing painting. Then the detail and working on the realism happens in the last 40% ~ in a place called ‘the zone’. Art lesson over Lol
