The Temptation
Piece Two in my HSC body of Work. The series in total is called “Ascendancy” which means domination or influincing figure, but also has connotations to the ascention of Mary in Christianity. Basically what i tried to do was to show how humanity’s expression of faith has changed, evolved, or even stayed the same. “The Temptation” refers to the temptation of Christ by the devil (40 nights in the desert, etc)

I stare at it every day on my desktop, and I love finding all of the little details and tones and marks, especially her right hand.

Wow. You have great talent. Your ability to turn a 2 dimentional piece of paper/canvas into a 3 dimensional form is amazing. I am in awe.

This one is really interesting.
I’m impressed on a lot of levels: Number one, that you’re taking on an issue of faith in a non-cheezy way (Thank God for that) and number two, that you seem to be (correct me if I’m wrong) making these elements of the catholic/christian faith accessable to a post-christian world.
I’m really intrigued by your personal faith as well: Would you say that you believe “traditionally” in the Christian faith, or that you have “evolved” in keeping with the modern era? If so, how?
Also, what does Mary have to do with this series? (Or is her “ascendancy” just a side fact—Christ also ascended.) And what is “HSC”?
April Cowan
haha! first up – thank you so much, not only for your comment, but for your interest. I”ll happily answer all your questions ^ but i think i’ll start with that last one:
HSC stands for Higher School Certificate – I don’t know if you’re in Australia or not, but its the final exams for high school students in NSW. In Visual Arts, 75% of our mark (or something liek that) comes from our Body of Work, which we create over the year. “Ascendancy” was mine.
Believe it or not, i’m not actually religious. I don’t believe in Christianity or any other faith – but, i do hold firm that religion is necessary for society as a whole, even if there are those (like myself) who cannot, or choose not to, believe. People need to have hope, for what comes next, and for what is in the here and now. Religion is the easiest (and i don’t mean that in a negative way) means for this.
However – i went to a Catholic School all my life. I’ve learnt the ins and outs of it, and made my own decisions. I appreciate a lot that has come from my schooling, and my semi-religious family, like the morals and whatnot, but the faith itself to me is fictional. So, When you ask if i ‘evolved’ in keeping with the modern era… i probably did, yes, but i really hope i’m not like the.. well, in your own words (which are much nicer than mine) “cheezy” adolescents of today, haha!
I did reall want to make this a postmodern series. i wanted it to be looked at in not only todays context, but in the past’s aswell, so that the viewer themselves could pick out whatever differences or similarities they saw, and make their own judgements. There are obviously a few points i wanted to make clear – like the replacement of religion i society with sex and image – but i also wanted to see what you could see, through eyes that have a completely different outlook than my own.
now, Mary’s place is a bit more complicated – i really just needed a way to make my work clear to someone who didn’t know Catholicism as in depth as i do, just to make that connection to religion. using the ascension worked on two fronts – not only is it a key part in the bible, but the word ‘Ascendancy’ means domination or influencing figure – i wanted to comment on religions place in our world, whether it had changed or still held as much sway as it did back 100 years.
I hope i’ve answered your questions, and i’m sorry if my wording is a bit jumbled – i tend o get distracted and run off on tangents when i write about my thoughts, haha! And thank you again – you have no diea how great it feels to have someone taking an interest ^
