The Betrayal

April Cowan

The Betrayal

This is the first piece in my HSC major works. The series in total is called “Ascendancy” which means domination or influincing figure, but also has connotations to the ascention of Mary in Christianity. Basically what i tried to do was to show how humanity’s expression of faith has changed, evolved, or even stayed the same. “The Betrayal” is basically a contemporary version of the betrayel of Jesus my Judas.

WOW again April. Such a dramatic and powerful image. Love the man’s right hand stretched out against the darkness. Looks amazing. Again, it is the power and energy you capture in your work that I feel drawn to. Cannot wait to see some of your new work.

  • April Cowan replied

^^ haha, i feel really bashful, after going through all these comments! this piece, i have to admit, was incredibly fun, especially watching people’s reactions after i’d finished =P my sister is afraid of it, lol.
I’m afraid new work might take some time – i’ve just began uni, studying fine arts, and there is that much work – i have to get used to that before i start doing some things on my own, that aren’t basic techniques and the like. But, all the same, i really appreciate that you added me to your watch list!

beautiful use of tenebrism… very dramatic reminiscent of “judith beheading holonfernes” by gentileschi

  • April Cowan replied

Thank you. I’d honestly never heard of gentileschi (yes, you should be horrified by my absolute lack of art history knowledge . i certainly am) but i’ve really enjoyed studying her work now, so i’ll thank you for that, too ^^ i really appreciate it

great composition and hierarchial structural dynamic to make the comment. Tension with the calm and chaos in opposition, the diagonal and horizontal. All the best for your HSC.
