I read recently about shepherd’s (like David in the old testament) and their sheep.
The sheep have a certain pecking order it seems and they stay in line and behind the one above them in the pecking order. All day long they keep this position. However, once a day each sheep will trot over to the shepherd. The good shepherd rubs the sheep’s nose and ears, giving little scratches in the itchy places and whispers quietly to the sheep. Reassured and encouraged the sheep goes back into position again.
When David wrote the 23rd Psalm he remembered those wonderful days when he trusted God and God would reassure him daily. He remembered the days of Goliath and the days before he was king when God protected him so many times.
Then David did wrong and sinned and lost his closeness to God. He injured his own soul but never called on God to heal him and whisper assurances to him. His injured soul became festered until the pain finally brought him back to the only one that could heal it for him.
David admitted his sin and repented from it. Immediately, God covered him with His hand and healed his broken soul and heart. In other words, God restored his soul as David expresses in this precious Psalm.
Is your soul injured because of sins you have not turned over to God? If so, just turn from your sin and repent and immediately God will restore your soul.
Perhaps you have never known the wondrous feeling when God restores your soul. Your sins may be holding you back. Sins are enjoyable for a season but nothing compares to having your soul restored by God Himself. Simply trust Him!
Trust Him when thy wants are many;
Trust Him when thy friends are few;
And the time of swift temptation
Is the time to trust Him too.
Trust Him when thy soul is burdened
With the sense of all its sin;
He will speak the word of pardon,
He will make thee clean within.
Trust Him for the grace sufficient,
Ever equal to thy need;
Trust Him always for the answer,
When in His dear name you plead.
Trust Him when dark doubts assail thee,
Trust Him when thy strength is small,
Trust Him when to simply trust Him
Seems the hardest thing of all.
Trust Him; He is ever faithful;
Trust Him, for His will is best;
Trust Him, for the heart of Jesus
Is the only place of rest.
Trust Him, then, through cloud or sunshine,
All thy cares upon Him cast,
Till the storm of life is over,
And the trusting days are past.
