Psalm 23:2(b) He Leadeth Me Beside the Still Waters
Herman Baker Park – Lake Pickens – Sherman, Texas, USA
Dedicated to our Good Shepherd who always leads me beside the still waters if I’m willing to follow.
The shepherd knows that sheep are instinctively afraid of running water and with good reason. Sheep are not good swimmers and to make matters worse the water soaks into their wool. It is like a man in a wool coat trying to swim.
The shepherd is always on the look out for an inlet or pond of still water for his sheep to drink. If there isn’t one he will make one out of stones so even the smallest lamb can quench their thirst with no fear of drowning.
The shepherd does not make fun of the sheep because of their fear but is understanding of the fear and relieves his flock of such fear.
The Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, knows each of our limitations and fears. He is understanding of our fear – never ridiculing it. He always prepares a way for each of his children to overcome their fear. Before we were born God knew exactly what we would need to live in this world and provided it for us both physically, mentally and spiritually.
Recently I was reminded of this very thing as satan and his demons launched an attack on me first physically, then mentally and eventually spiritually. It had been years since the devil had bother me in such a way and so I did not see the signs for what it truly was for a few weeks. But, one day after many tests the doctor told me my infirmity wasn’t physical but psychological I discussed it with my sister who told me in no uncertain terms that I did not have a psychological problem. Then it dawned on me that it wasn’t physical or mental but a spiritual warfare from satan himself.
Immediately upon coming to this conclusion I felt the Holy Spirit grow in me. God showed me the still waters and how, if I just would let Him, I could overcome satan and his demons. The next time a “seizure” began I called on my Savior, Jesus Christ and told satan that by the “blood of Jesus” he had to leave. I have not had a complete “seizure” since then. Satan still attacks – always just as I am going to sleep – but now that I know his plan of attack I also know the counterattack to rid him of any power over me.
If you are a Christian your Good Shepherd wants to lead you beside still waters. First you must obey Him and walk with Him daily by reading His Word and communing with Him in prayer. It is only then that we can fully appreciate the still waters He has prepared for us.
If you have never repented of your sin and asked Jesus into your heart you can never experience the wonderful glory of walking with Him beside still waters. But, all it takes is a simple prayer of salvation to see those calm waters and feel His presence walking with you every moment of every day.
