We visited a chimp sanctuary on Ngamba Island, Uganda. Many of the chimps had been rescued from poachers and the illegal pet trade

Ooooo , now thats interesting, a few years ago they didnt permit it – or it may have been that they couldnt be taken with humans in the frame – something to that effect.

  • ooh right, how funny, no there were no probs at all))

Did you get to walk with them Jane?

  • Nah, this was something I really wanted to do. It involved lots of paperwork, jabs, chest x-ray, tb test, money and travel!! I really, really wanted to do it, contacted a couple of travel agencies to no avail, then contacted Ngamba directly. They said I could do it but after doing all the above, I had to take some paperwork to I think it was Entebbe, which was impossible as we were travelling with a group, couldn’t make a detour for this. Also, I doubt if we would have been on the island at the right time for the chimp walk, so all in all very frustrating! I did manage to purchase 3 great t-shirts Jul – two say 98.7 per cent chimp! (or whatever the percentage is). So I can’t wait to go to Cameroon and hopefully be more “hands on” – I love these babies so much I need to make contact! I tried to communicate with a couple of the chimps by using chimp language, they stared at me intently, we were very connected but a guard told me to move out of the way and stop “bothering” them. But they weren’t bothered! They were intrigued…it made me sad and frustrated that he just thought I was another stupid “tourist” who was winding up the chimps. (Sigh…)

  • Btw Jul, did you see my image, “chimp think”? This was also taken at Ngamba, of one of the chimps with whom I made a connection…
