Mr Red and Fluffy

Artist's Description

This is the elusive red squirrel. So called because I have waited for years to meet one. They are now largely extinct in England because of the introduction of the American grey squirrel.
We travelled to Brownsea Island, which is off the south coast of England. I was so excited, had done my homework, to ensure that we were visiting when there would be an abundance of red squirrels. (I learnt my lesson after visiting Skomer Island last year only to find no puffins).
When we set foot on the island the guide said that it was the wrong time of the year, we would be better coming in the autumn! oh no. So much for their website.
We hunted for hours, didn’t see one. Darn it. And it was getting cold and breezy. What a waste of time, I thought. Then when it was almost time to get on the boat I heard a noise amongst the leaves, which was in fact the sound of a nut hitting the floor from the branch of a tree. I looked up and came face to face with the dropper of the nut – Mr Red and Fluffy himself!
We only saw one but it was a great moment. He didn’t stay long, then he was gone, running about, high up in the trees, hidden among the leaves
Taken with Nikon D90 using 80-400mm lens
