I had the honour of working in Cameroon with rescued primates at the Limbe Wildlife Centre. Whilst in quarantine I cared for two mother chimpanzees who were nursing their tiny babies. They had been kept separate from the rest of the chimps to give them space and safety.
It was very moving when the mothers reached through and communicated with me. This mother is reaching out for a drink, which I fed her from a plastic bottle. She also liked drinking it from a blue plastic cup. If you have seen my picture, “Love”, then she is the wonderful mother who trusted me enough to touch her beautiful baby and to spend time with them whilst she nursed it.
All the primates at the Centre have been rescued from the illegal bushmeat and pet trade.
As we can see here – photos of animals can transmit a real emotional response. The angle of shot and use of wide angle to give a real 3D aspect to the hand coming through. The ‘serious’ expression and eye contact with camera is incredible. A truly exemplary shot :o)
Bless you again Paul :) I took two shots, and as I was close the dof was small, and the other shot has her hand in focus. I definitely decided the eyes have it, the face has it. She reaches out with her expression just as well as she does with her beautiful hand
As I have said on many comments on many portraits of both people and animals – no matter what – if the eye focus and secondly eye contact are there – then the shot is nailed. Your photo is a message of hope and shows the work of the better people of this world.
