These are two drills, having a play fight. The little one was a lot smaller, but kept instigating the play.

I took this at the Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon where I was looking after these wonderful, highly endangered animals.

The male drill is one of the most colourful monkeys in the world. When he is grown up he has a red chin on a black face with raised grooves exaggerating the shape of his nose. Also, his bottom is pink, mauve and blue! These bright colours help his family follow him through the forest.

The drill only lives in three countries: Cameroon’s Southwest Province, South East Nigeria and Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. The drill is Africa’s most endangered primate. A mother drill only has one young every six years, and a hunter can easily kill 30 Drills in a day. They are also losing their forest home

Excellent shot, and a perfect portrayal of the drill – totally in it’s element – playing. Those are some fearsome weapons that they have eh!

  • Yep they sure are fearsome teeth!

It always amazes me that so much teeth can be shown without actually hurting each other. Are these young Drills? (no canines!)

  • Yes they are young. Though the one with the teeth on the left was a lot bigger than the smaller one who dig all of the egging on…
