This is a red capped mangabey. I met him in Cameroon at the Limbe Wildlife Centre where I cleaned out his cage and fed him. These monkeys are extremely beautiful and also extremely dangerous. It was so difficult to get this shot as if I got too close he would grab me or grab my lens…phew!
Red-Capped Mangabeys have a distinctive red head, and a white tip to their tail. They are excellent jumpers, spending much of their time in the trees.
They are found in central West Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon). In the wild, they eat mostly fruit, but also leaves, mushrooms, shoots, nuts, grubs, ants, and insects.
Red-Capped Mangabeys are intensively hunted in Cameroon. Its habitat is also being destroyed by man through logging and farming. Their status is endangered.
