Hardship In Black and White
This is my original picture “Hardship” made into black and white. On the way to see the mountain gorillas in Rwanda we came across families working on the land. This young girl was helping her family collect drinking water from a standpipe. The people earned 1 USDollar a day here.

This has real impact – her direct gaze makes this a terrifically moving image. I did at first wonder if it might be improved by boosting the contrast a little, but I felt the way you have presented it really focuses your attention on her face without distraction so I love it as it is.

Amazing photo, her expression shows extreme fatigue she looks so sad.

I entirely agree with my wife’s comments – a super & moving photograph. In my usual way of presenting photographs I would boost contrast, bring out the eyes, darken the background etc. but here, the photograph does not really need that sort of manipulation to increase it’s impact – it’s already there in the girls eyes and to make all but minor adjustments would somehow seem dishonest in this instance.

thanks peter. I am new to any sort of manipulation. This is my first result today, my very first! I will experiment with contrasts, etc, but I think you can do too much sometimes. Thanks for the comments

Great work. Looks good in black and white but I still think you can’t beat the original colour one. It is definitely a photo that tells a story in either colour or black and white

You’ve done her justice with this image, conveying her beauty, her dignity, and her weariness. Children should not be so old before their time.
