Hold Me Mum!
I love these boys.
Lemurs are primates found only on the African island of Madagascar and some tiny neighboring islands. Because of its geographic isolation, Madagascar is home to many amazing animals found nowhere else on Earth. Lemurs may have floated there eons ago on “rafts” of vegetation and evolved in isolation over countless centuries.
Ring-tailed lemurs are unmistakable because of their long, vividly striped, black-and-white tail. They are familiar residents of many zoos.
Lemurs use their hands and feet to move nimbly through the trees, but cannot grip with their tails as some of their primate cousins do. Ring-tailed lemurs also spend a lot of time on the ground, which is unusual among lemur species. They forage for fruit, which makes up the greater part of their diet, but also eat leaves, flowers, tree bark, and sap.
Taken with Nikon D50.

Gorgeous portrait Jane. Madagascar is such a fascinating place, with such a fabulous story to tell about eveolution and survival of the fittest. I have a DVD here [in fact I have a series of them] about how it all moved along, and the lemurs and other primates of Madagascar flourished there, while they didn’t everywhere else, purely because of the absence of competition – AKA, monkeys. Needless to say, we all love monkeys, but its a really good job that they didn’t make it to Madagascar – or we wouldn’t have the great variety of lesser primates that we call Malagasy today.
ApeArt replied
Oh didn’t know that Jul. Would the monkeys have eaten the lemurs?! How was your weekend away?
Julie Langford
Monkeys are far more intelligent, and the competition for food would be enough to wipe them out, with monkeys being able to adapt and use their environment so well. They would also be tougher than the lemurs and especially the smaller madagascan primates, and would bully them away from food sources. The larger and more efficient apes, would eat them also.
Julie Langford
The weekend was fab – a newborn elephant was born the day we got there, what timing eh!
ApeArt replied
well Jul you are so jammy :D (any pics?)
Julie Langford
yep – they are on here
ApeArt replied
oh didn;t seem em will look
gottheshot
If I were being ‘picky’ with my own photo of lemurs I would have hoped for the comp of the whole body of the parent – but that kinda thinking makes the parent as important as the shot of the baby. A photo is about ISOLATING A SUBJECT and your shot does that – BABY WINS SMILES and so does your photo,
Baby is posing for the camera – NOT MUM. Fab Jane, FAB xx
ApeArt replied
Hey thanks Paul. I actually did have more of the body but decided to crop it xx
Robin Webster
Oh they are so beautiful! What a delightful capture!
ApeArt replied
hey thanks Robin :)

Your choice of cropping this photo makes the baby lemur ‘leap outta the photo’.
It gives him more prominence within the frame.
The baby is the STAR and the parent is the CO-STAR of the photo :o)

Bless you Paul xx
