Acrobatic Troupe
I love these boys – precariously balancing on a swinging beam, looks of concentration and consternation written across their funny little faces.
They are white throated capuchins and we saw them at Apenheul Primate Park in Holland, a wonderful place to visit.
Taken with Nikon D50

Small, Medium and Large – all at play :o) Reminds me of my three’s a crowd shot but in this case all 3 got on board :o) Getting the three curly tails and the two front hands in a very tight shot is nice work together with the focusing.
Great expressions too.
Well done Jane ;o)

OMG, these guys just take the biscuit when it comes to cheekiness. They really are fascinating little monkeys and as can be seen by this shot, they bond very strongly with fwllow group members.
ApeArt replied
Lol thanks Jul, they are so funny. But they always look so damned miserable! Do you know why??

Yes, the capuchins use facial expressions, as well as vocals, as way of communication within their group. The miserable frown, that is typically capuchin [through all the species], means things are peaceful. They raise their eyebrows up and down to show approval, and they actually smile as well. To show disapproval or to get attention they will grab things and bang things, and make as much noise as possible, and they also urine wash, or wash their bodies in strong smelling substances. This is thought to be to mark their territory and to act as a natural insect repellant. Capuchins are the most intellegent of all the new world monkeys.
ApeArt replied
Oh cool, great facts. Esp the insect repellant, I must try that next time I am abroad :) I have never seen them smile, they always seem to frown, have you seen them smile?
Julie Langford
Yes, there is a small group at a sanctuary close to my home [not the best of places, and I go there more to see if I can see improvements than anything else]. There are five of them and one in particular always comes to the cage side and communicates. It starts off with some high pitched purring and head tilting [showing admiration], and then goes onto raising eyebrows. On three occasions, it has smiled.
ApeArt
Oh wow Jul, how lovely (well not the conditions, but the fact that it seems happy at times)
Julie Langford
I don’t know if you have ever seen this but you must
Capuchin intelligence
It brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it, and is one of my favorite videos.
And
here is a smiling capuchin
ApeArt replied
Lol how very funny when the nuts fly out at sharp angles and at the end when they chuck the rock over the cliff. I think their smile is quite enigmatic…
