Stilt fishing is a traditional fishing technique of Sri Lanka, practiced mainly by a handful of fishermen along the picturesque coastal stretch between Unawatuna (near Galle) and Mirissa (off Weligama).
Here, the fishermen balance themselves on a cross bar (approximately 1 meter above the water) attached to vertical pole (stilt) lodged in the sea bed.
This photo was taken on a gloomy morning near Midigama, a small township between Ahangama and Weligama. The island in the background is called ‘Rendha-Gala’ and the legends have that a devil spirit has once used a granite bolder (which can still be seen near the right hand side end of the island) to weave laces!!
Well Anuja- I thought I had seen it all- but no! this I haven’t seen before!! Your capture of this amazing custom is perfect- the blue tones and the silhouettes- magic!! Wonderful work :)
Awesome capture! They look like puppets on sticks. :) I wonder how long they can do that and how many fish they can get…
Thanks for the comments Raphael. I am not sure how long they usually stay on those stilts continuously. However, I do think this cannot be the most efficient way of fishing.
A magical, almost otherwordly image. I like your composition, your description and the fascinating nature of this image. You have a wonderful portfolio filled with compelling faces and images. Thank you for sharing your vision with us!
